Job Description

Position Overview

The Maintenance Equipment Operator operated heavy duty trucks and tractor-trailer units in the pickup and delivery of products, supplies and equipment for Correctional Industries. This position coordinates servicing and repairs of all trucks, instructs and monitors individuals in custody in the loading and unloading of products, supplies and equipment, and maintains running inventory of equipment used in the pickup and delivery of goods. The ideal candidate would be self-motivated, task oriented, and organized. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply.  

Essential Functions

  • Operates heavy duty trucks and tractor-trailer units in the pickup and delivery of Correctional Industries products, supplies and equipment for Correctional Industries.
  • Coordinates all servicing and repairs of all trucks.
  • Instructs and monitors individuals in custody in the loading and unloading of Industries products, supplies, and equipment.
  • Maintains running inventory of equipment used in the pickup and delivery of goods.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
  • Requires one (1) year of experience in performing a variety of semiskilled mechanical and manual tasks in the maintenance and operation of automotive or related maintenance equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers Forklift Certification.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of professional experience utilizing electronic navigation devices.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of professional experience using electronic and/or paper driving logs.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of professional experience maintaining vehicle maintenance logs.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience guiding and instructing workers loading and unloading trailers.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience maintaining a tool log report and/or similar type of inventory log.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Requires a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Airbrakes Endorsement.
  • This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires the ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
